God- This Is Where It All Starts...

I'm not really good with tools.  In the screwdriver community, there is something called a "Flat-head" screwdriver and a "Phillips-head" screwdriver.  I guess that makes sense if you know what you are talking about...but I get them confused (I know, I know...I'm an idiot...).  So instead of the confusion, I decided to rename them...a "flat-head" screwdriver was now a "minus" screwdriver and a Phillips-head" was a "plus" screwdriver.  Sounds good, right?
So whenever I need to "fix" something or put a new baby accessory together for the boys, I would whip out either a "plus" or "minus" screwdriver.  However, as we purchased more and more stuff that needed my expertise configuration, I would begin to become overburdened.  There had to be an easier way to assemble all of these things than just by hand...and there was...it was called a drill.
I finally purchased a drill and after the first time that I used the drill, I began to realize all that I had been missing.  I was now beginning to look at these types of assembly work projects much differently now that I had an understanding of how drills work!
How often do we do that...go throughout life doing things one way or thinking about things another way, only to learn that there is another way that we never knew.  Do you think we ever do that with God?  Have you ever stopped and wondered about where your understanding of God came from?  Is it correct?  Because if we don'tunderstand who God is at His core, the way we approach life- pain, prayer, relationships, purpose, identity, etc... will be totally different.
This past Sunday night, we began our "Life in 6 Words" study.  We began with who God is.  We did this because we realized that everything else in this series and in life, is determinded by who God is and how He is (or isn"t) involved in these aspects of our lives.  So during this next week, start here- Who is God?  Spend time digging into His Word and allow Him to explain who He is and How He desires to be a part of your life!

Use the questions below to dig deeper into this topic during this next week!

1. Read John 1:1-4.  What does these verses say about who God is?
- As a Creator
- When He began
- His connection with humanity

2. Why do you think there are so many differert views of who/or what God is?  Where do they stem from?

3. Think of your understanding of God.  Where does it stem from?  (The Bible, parents, church, life experiences, etc...)?

4. Read Psalm 23.  This is a pretty familiar passage.  However, take a closer look- what type of relationship is David expressing that He has with God?
- God desires to be intimatrely close to us in relationship "for His names sake".  He hold our lives together.  Does it bring you comfort or discomfort knowing that God is intimately involved in your life?  Why?

5. Think through some of these common views of God...What is incomplete about each?
- God is a Cosmic-Vending Machine
- God is a Kill-Joy Rule Enforcer
- God is my B.F.F.
- God is an Impersonal Force Somewhere Out in the Universe

6. What are some views of God that your friends hold?  How can you point them to the God of scripture who is Big, Glorious, About Hos Own Glory, Creator of Everything...yet...knows each of us Intimately, Loves Us, and Desires a Relationship With Us?

Plan to join us Thursday night at 7pm at Matt & Amanda's as we go deeper with this topic of God.
