My friend called me last night with some disturbing news...
He went on to explain how his dad had been in a serious car accident the night before. While trying to merge on to a busy highway, he was hit by another car. The impact of the two cars caused his dad's car to roll multiple times causes him to loose consciousness. He was then airlifted to the University of Penn here he stayed the night. He was released a day later with only minor scratches and bruising.
As you can assume, this story shocked me. However, as sad as it was, the crash wasn't the part of the story that stuvk out to me the most. What struck me was how his dad reacted to the situation. As he was laying in the critcal care until on UPENN, he realized the man next to him was also in a car accident. The difference? He didn't make it. This caused my friend's dad to loose it. He began to realize that in the blink of an eye his life could have been over...It is these experiences that cause us to think about life...and death. The only question that will matter at the end of our lives is what we believe about Jesus...
As we saw Sunday night in Ecclesiastes 7:2, it is wise if we are students who think about death, because to be honest, we all will die someday. How we begin to work through the question of what happens after we die, will affect the way that we live life from here on out. It will also cause us to look at those around us differently.
Use these questions and passages of scripture this week to work on this idea of what happens after we die. Also, allow this topic to affect the way you look at your friendships and how you approach each one.
1. Read John 4:35
- Jesus is speaking about fields being ripe for a harvest, meaning that there are people all around us that need to hear about Jesus...the question is, are your eyes open to these people?
- What holds you back from sharing your faith?
2. If you knew your best friend would live for another 50 years or die in 3 days...would you react to that friendship the same way? If not, what would change?
3. In Matthew 25:46, Jesus speaks about a eternal punishment & eternal life...How do you react to the idea of heaven & hell? How do you react to the idea that they are eternal?
- Does this change your view of God at all? If so, how?
4. In Matthew 16:13-17, Jesus asks Peter who people say that Jesus is...
- If people looked at your life as an example, who would they say Jesus is?
- Who do your parents say Jesus is?
- Who do your friends say Jesus is?
- Who do you say Jesus is? How does your life reflect that belief?
5. In Acts 16:30-31, Paul tells the prison jailor that he can be saved by belieiving on the Lord Jesus Christ.
- Who in your life needs to know this truth about eternal life?
- What is stopping you from sharing Christ with them?
